The public is advised to drive slower or switch to walking and cycling for shorter journeys, according to fuel-reduction advice from the Department of Transport.

The department has said drivers can reduce fuel costs by avoiding heavy braking and acceleration, making sure their tyres are pumped, and by not carrying heavy items in the boot.

It also said motorists looking to cut fuel costs should remove vehicle roof boxes when not in use.

The advice forms part of a publication by Minister Darragh O’Brien’s Department on Wednesday, which asks the public to consider walking or cycling for trips under 2km.

It said people should “use new and improved cycle lanes, greenways and footpaths in your area”.

Under a heading about choosing public transport more often, the Department said reduced fares are in place for many – with the existing TFI leap card offering rates that are up to 30% cheaper than cash tickets.

It said “small reductions in car use can have a big impact” as it invites people to consider whether they can “reduce your weekly car journeys by 20 per cent?”; “switch part of your journeys to public transport?”; and asks “what about park and ride?”

The advice to carpool for work, school or sport activities – as well as combining tasks over fewer journeys can also help deliver on the country’s climate ambitions.

The department said electric vehicles are a “key part” of the country’s transport transition, with grants and supports available for those looking to switch.
