WORKS to upgrade Tullow’s ageing water infrastructure are approaching the two-thirds completion mark, with the project set to finish by September, Uisce Éireann has announced.

The utility company has now replaced almost 1.4km of the planned 2.1km of ageing water mains with modern pipes as part of its national leakage reduction programme. The upgrades are designed to significantly reduce water loss, improve pressure and enhance the overall resilience of the water network serving homes and businesses in the Tullow region.

To date, works have been completed on Bridge Street, Mill Street, Market Square, John Street, Bishops Street and Old Chapel Lane. Construction is currently underway on Chapel Lane, with work set to progress to Cross Keys and The Course.

“We are delighted with the progress made on this project and would like to thank the people of Tullow for their continued patience and support as these essential town centre works continue,” said Dave Murphy, programme manager with Uisce Éireann.

Mr Murphy added that the project remains on track for completion by September, emphasising the company’s commitment to delivering “a more secure and reliable water supply to communities across Ireland.”

The Tullow works form part of Uisce Éireann's broader national infrastructure investment programme. Since 2018, the company has invested more than €500 million to upgrade the underground water network across the country through the Leakage Reduction Programme.

The utility company is investing a further €250 million annually until the end of 2030, focusing on fixing leaks and replacing pipes to provide more reliable water supplies. Uisce Éireann is targeting a reduction in the national leakage rate to 25% by 2030, down from a peak of 46% in 2018.

Members of the public can report leaks in the public water network by contacting Uisce Éireann on 1800 278 278 or online. The company also offers a free text service providing real-time updates for local issues, with customers able to sign up using their Eircode and mobile number at www.water.ie.
