THE sun shone and the golf clubs swung as Co Carlow Chamber of Commerce hosted its annual golf classic at Carlow Golf Club last week, with teams from 24 different businesses taking part in the popular networking event. Sponsored by Michael Lyng Motors, the tournament attracted golfers of varying abilities, who were all eager to enjoy a day out on one of the county’s premier courses.
“We are so lucky to have such a stunning course here in Carlow – and it is an added bonus when you get glorious sunshine,” said Norah Ryan, president of the chamber. “The golf classic has become an important staple in our events calendar. It offers members the chance not only to compete against each other but also to network informally and have some fun.” The competitive spirit was there for all to see, with Michael Lyng Motors claiming the top prize with an impressive score of 96 points. The Woodford Dolmen Hotel finished as runners-up with 94, proving that the hospitality sector knows how to handle pressure both on and off the course.
Individual honours went to several local business representatives. Ger Kirwan of Unum demonstrated his precision by winning the closest to the pin competition, sponsored by Carlow Co Council. Mark Delany from the Talbot Hotel powered his way to victory in the men’s longest drive, sponsored by Harney Chartered Accountants, while Louise Arnott of Jones Engineering claimed the ladies’ longest drive in the same sponsored category.
The putting green saw some fierce competition, with Detail Menswear sponsoring the category that was won by Alan Shelley of Simply Workflow, Martin Deane of Carlow Dental Centre and Michelle Cullen of Jones Engineering.
Chamber CEO Nicola Doran was full of praise for all those who made the event possible. “Events like these don’t happen by themselves – I’d like to thank everyone who joined us on the day and made the event so special, and all those that helped with the set-up and running of the event,” she explained.
The day was supported by an impressive list of local businesses, with 27 tee box sponsors contributing to the event’s success. Hickson’s Centra, Walsh Whiskey and Carlow Brewing kept participants refreshed throughout the day, while the teams at Carlow Golf Club and the Lazy River Café provided excellent hospitality.
Winners will be formally recognised at the chamber summer social, taking place at Calluna Bar and Grill later this month, giving the business community another opportunity to come together to celebrate their achievements.
“We are looking forward to next year’s event already,” added Nicola, suggesting that this year’s glorious weather and strong participation has set a high bar for future tournaments.
