Last chance to have your say on Graiguecullen cycle scheme

The proposed cycle lane for Graigue

Time is running out for people who wish to comment on the proposed Church Street Pedestrian and Cycle Scheme in Graiguecullen, with submissions closing at 5pm tomorrow, Tuesday 7 July.

The scheme, a joint project between Carlow and Laois county councils, involves the construction of new and upgraded cycle infrastructure along an approximately 750-metre route. It begins at the Barrowvale housing estate in Co Laois and continues along Church Street, serving Oakley Park, the rear entrance of St Fiacc's National School and Governey Park, before extending to Sleaty Street and the entrance to Carlow Town Park. It also includes Safe Routes to School measures at the rear entrance of St Fiacc's NS.

The proposal has proven controversial locally, with residents voicing strong opposition at a series of public meetings in recent weeks over concerns including the loss of on-street parking, the impact on a local business and whether the lanes will be used.

Drawings and details of the proposal can be inspected until tomorrow on the consultation portals at consult.carlow.ie and consult.laois.ie, at County Buildings, Athy Road, Carlow, or at Laois County Council, Áras an Chontae, Portlaoise.

Submissions can be made through either portal, by email to activetravel@carlowcoco.ie or activetravel@laoiscoco.ie with the subject line "Church Street Pedestrian & Cycle Scheme, Graiguecullen – Section 38", or in writing, clearly marked with the same title, to the Senior executive engineer, Active Travel Department, at either council. The councils have asked that people use one method only.
