TRIBUTES are being paid to a Borris man who died on Saturday afternoon after he was struck by a car while he was out walking near his home.

James ‘Jimmy’ Nolan, Tinnecarrig, Borris passed away after he was struck by a car at 4.30pm at Ballyroughan Big, Borris.

Jimmy was the adored son of Christina and Andy, and brother to David, Mary, Elaine and Mairéad.

Believed to be in his 40s, he was known for his love of being outdoors and for his gentle nature.

Jimmy attended the Delta Centre for people with special needs in Carlow and yesterday (Monday) his fellow service users and staff members were trying to come to terms with his death.

In a statement to The Nationalist, Janet Dunlevy, day services manager said: ‘We are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of James Nolan, a cherished member of the Delta community. James was a gentle soul whose warmth and kindness touched everyone around him. He will be deeply missed by his many friends and staff in Delta. May he rest in peace.’

A family friend said: “I was shocked when I heard the news. You never know from one day to the next what will happen. He was a lovely chap, very quiet. You’d often see him out walking in the area.”

When his death notice was published on RIP.ie yesterday afternoon, people remembered him as ‘a character and a gentleman’ who will be ‘sorely missed by all’, and ‘a quiet chap’.

Details of his funeral arrangements had not yet been finalised when The Nationalist was going to press, but one neighbour said that the close-knit community of Ballymurphy and the parish of Borris will be there to support and comfort the Kelly family.

“There’s a very strong community in Ballymurphy. The whole community will be on hand to help and support the family,” a neighbour said.

Gardaí are investigating the accident and are appealing to any witnesses, particularly any road users who may have camera footage, who were travelling in the area to contact Carlow Garda Station on 059 9136620, the Garda confidential line on 1800 666111 or any garda station.
