Flyfishing workshop in Garryhill hoping to reel in ladies over-18

Madeleine Kelly of the Irish Ladies Flyfishing Association

THE Irish Ladies Flyfishing Association (ILFA) is bringing something different to Carlow this summer ‒ a chance for women to swap the gym for the great outdoors and learn the art of flyfishing.

On Sunday 13 July, the Southern County Fishing Resort near Garryhill will host an introductory workshop designed specifically for women over-18. The event starts at 11am with indoor instruction, followed by four hours of practical casting lessons outside, with all equipment provided.

Leading the session will be Dan O’Neill from Kilkenny, an APGAI-qualified fly-casting instructor, alongside Maddy Kelly from Co Down, who wears two impressive hats as both ILFA’s public relations officer and president of the International Ladies Flyfishing Association covering Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales.

For Ms Kelly, the Carlow event marks a personal milestone: “This will be my first time visiting the Southern County Fishing Resort and it’s also the first time for me to fish in Co Carlow,” she said. “I’ve been flyfishing for nearly 40 years and have fished in nearly every county in Ireland, so I’ll be able to tick Co Carlow off my list.”

Anne Kerrin, chair of the ILFA, believes more women should discover what she calls angling’s “well-kept secret.” According to Ms Kerrin, the appeal goes far beyond actually catching fish.

“To be outdoors with nature surrounding you, in beautiful places, really gives a boost to your health and wellbeing,” she explained. “And most times it doesn’t matter if you catch a fish or not. The fish is a bonus. It’s also great exercise. Scrambling five miles up along a riverbank and wading really works the inner core.”

The workshop is expected to draw participants from across Ireland. The ILFA runs more than just introductory sessions; the organisation operates an annual league of four trials to select Ireland’s team for the ladies’ international flyfishing championships.

Those interested need only bring warm clothing and waterproofs, as all fishing equipment will be supplied. However, booking is essential and must be completed in advance through www.irishladiesflyfishing.com or by emailing Maddy Kelly at proirishladiesflyfishing@gmail.com.
