First pocket library installed at town’s garda station

CARLOW’S first pocket library is installed at Carlow Garda Station A new community-driven project in Carlow town has taken root as An Garda Síochána, Carlow Co Council and community organisations co-created a community garden outside the garda station.
The project began with improvement works carried out by Carlow municipal district office and a pocket library to encourage people to “bring a book and take a book” was also set up. This marks the start of a new initiative aimed at promoting literacy, environmental education and positive community engagement.
Members of Carlow Regional Youth Services’ Comhairle Na nÓg and Carlow Co Council Tempe Sister Cities twinning programme came together to celebrate the installation of the pocket library, with children and adults alike selecting books. Representatives from An Garda Síochána and Carlow Co Council were also present, reinforcing the message of gardaí as trusted and accessible figures in the community.
“We’re proud to support this initiative. It’s a wonderful step in reinforcing our garda station as a safe, welcoming space for everyone,” said Supt Anthony Farrell.
“This is more than just a green space ‒ it’s a living classroom, a meeting point and a collaboration between the gardaí, local government and the people of Carlow,” said former mayor of the municipal district of Carlow cllr Fintan Phelan.
