Eimear turns 'extraordinary' DJ Carey story into RTÉ documentary

Carlow author Eimear Ní Bhraonáin details her investigation to RTÉ cameras in the new documentary series charting the rise and fall of hurling legend DJ Carey.
The first hour-long episode of aired on RTÉ yesterday (Monday) evening, 24 November to rave reviews. It covers Carey’s ascent to hurling immortality as a star Kilkenny corner forward and featured never-before-seen footage of DJ Carey and interviews with victims, sports journalists, and former friends.
Journalist and author of Ms Ní Bhraonáin, followed DJ Carey’s story for years and became a co-producer on the series.
The programme arrives just weeks after DJ Carey (54) was sentenced to five and a half years in prison for fraud valued at nearly €400,000 based on false claims that he was receiving cancer treatment.
The documentary series was produced by Fine Point Films, who previously made Kneecap, Quinn Country and Taking Back Control.
“DJ Carey’s rise and fall is one of the most extraordinary stories we’ve ever told”, said director Trevor Birney (of Kneecap, Quinn Country, Michael Lynn: The Fugitive, Taking Back Control).
Ms Ní Bhraonáin said he was the perfect director for this story as he "understood the complexities" of telling DJ Carey's story.
“I could be pure and say I only like the book but these days people access information in all forms; the TV is very powerful”, said Ms Ní Bhraonáin.
The first episode of DJ Carey: The Dodger is available to watch on RTÉ Player and explains how the myth of DJ Carey came to be. The second episode which tells the story of his life in retirement and his false cancer claims will show on RTÉ One on Monday, 1 December at 9.35pm.
