Woman charged with stealing €2 package of biscuits

Portloaise Courthouse
A WOMAN who was brought before Portlaoise District Court on foot of a bench warrant told Judge Andrew Cody that she did not steal a €2 packet of biscuits.
On 4 December last, 28-year-old Mary Lou Nevin, 21 Grove Park, Mountmellick is alleged to have taken a packet of biscuits valued at €2 from the Apple Green service station, Clonmel Road, Townspark, Cahir, Co Tipperary.
She is also charged with engaging in threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour at Cahir Garda Station on the same date.
Noting that Garda Paul Dooley had to exercise several bench warrants in bringing Ms Nevin to court, Judge Cody said: “Stealing a packet of biscuits. It’s wasting a lot of money over a €2 packet of biscuits.”
“I didn't steal the biscuits,” she shouted back.
Judge Cody remanded the defendant on her own bail of €100 and adjourned the case to Cashel District Court on 20 March.
He refused to grant free legal aid for what he said was “a most minor case”.
On her way out of the courtroom, Ms Nevin shouted up to the Judge Cody: “I was living in a hostel at the time. I didn't get the bench warrants.”
