A MYSHALL man was found guilty in Carlow District Court last week of breaking the glass door of a shoe shop in Carlow town.

Callum Slye, Ballykeenan, Myshall had denied a charge of criminally damaging the front door of Shoe Style, Tullow Street, Carlow on 20 April 2022, but Judge John O’Leary found him guilty as charged.

The manager of the shop, Pauline Larkin, gave evidence of how she was called by the alarm company that the alarm had been set off in the shop. She said that when she got there she saw that the glass door into the shop had been smashed and that it cost €280 to repair it.

The court heard that investigating garda Eric Conway harvested CCTV from the Dinn Rí Hotel, which is near to Shoe Style, and identified Mr Slye on the film. He said that he knew Mr Slye (28) from past dealings and that he interviewed him about the incident in June and then charged him with criminal damage.

Garda Conway said that the defendant admitted being on Tullow Street that night, having gone to several pubs there. He said that when it was put to Mr Slye that he broke the door, he denied it. CCTV footage screened in court showed three people walking down Tullow Street and one of them hitting the door of Shoe Style just before the alarm was activated.

Solicitor Joe Farrell submitted to Judge O’Leary that his client admitted to gardaí that he was on Tullow Street that night but that it was “a huge leap” to say that he was the person who damaged the door.

However, Judge O’Leary found that the CCTV showing Mr Slye walking past the shop in question matched the time that the door was broken and said that the state had made its case.

He then convicted Mr Slye and ordered him to pay €400 in compensation to Ms Larkin. He adjourned the case until 11 December to give him a chance to gather the money.
