Councillors in Carlow react to threats to local TDs

Minister of state Jennifer Murnane O'Connor received threatening phone calls and messages

“A SCANDALOUS, scurrilous act” was how councillor John Cassin described the graffiti saying ‘Shoot a TD’ discovered on a bin in Carlow town last week.

“I just wanted to offer solidarity with all TDs, but particularly our two in Carlow. Whatever about having political differences or falling out with someone, it's a scandalous thing to say. I think we should write to both TDs and say we stand in solidarity with them,” he said at a recent Carlow municipal district meeting.

Cllr Fintan Phelan concurred with cllr Cassin, saying the graffiti was “an example of the toxicity now that’s out there … for public representatives, it is getting worrying.” “If there’s anything we can do as a council or as an MD to support our council or Oireachtas members, we should be doing it,” he concluded.
