Pensioner fined and put off the road after testing positive for coke

Judge Geraldine Carthy

A PENSIONER was last week fined €1,400 and put off the road for two years after he pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of cocaine and to dangerous driving.

Patrick Gaffney pleaded guilty to charges of dangerous driving, of driving under the influence, of driving without a driver’s licence and of driving while disqualified after an accident occurred at Knocknacree, Castledermot on 25 April last year.

Sergeant Hud Kelly told Judge Geraldine Carthy that gardaí were called to the scene of a two-car collision at that location and that one of the drivers told them that the other car had swerved across the road and hit her. He added that Mr Gaffney appeared confused and did not know what had happened, and a subsequent drug test revealed the presence of cocaine.

Solicitor Joe Farrell told the court that Mr Gaffney, Windmill Heights, Wexford was “very contrite” and “very embarrassed” by what had happened. He added that he was also a pensioner and that he had pleaded guilty as charged.

Judge Carthy imposed fines totalling €1,400 while also disqualifying Mr Gaffney from driving for two years.
