No recollection of stealing goods from Aldi

A MAN was convicted of stealing from Aldi in Graiguecullen at Carlow District Court. Jamie Pullen (33) of no fixed abode was charged with two separate thefts, but after pleading guilty to one theft that occurred on 15 August 2025, the other charge was struck out.

The court heard that at 2pm on that day, gardaí received a report of a male in a grey tracksuit who went into Aldi in Graiguecullen and took goods to the value of €61.27, walking out without attempting to pay.

Gardaí later identified Mr Pullen from CCTV footage.

Mr Pullen has 71 previous convictions, the most recent from Carlow Circuit Court on 15 June 2021 for two counts of driving without insurance. He also has previous convictions for assault and criminal damage.

Solicitor Joe Farrell said that Mr Pullen had no previous convictions for a theft offence and that he’d had a lengthy period without offending. Mr Farrell also said that Mr Pullen was accompanied to court by his partner and that they had been on the housing list for some time. Mr Pullen had previously suffered from chronic addiction and had no recollection of the day he committed the theft. He had since apologised to the shop owners and would like also to apologise to the court.

Mr Farrell asked that Judge Andrew Gubbins give Mr Pullen a non-custodial sentence if he could.

Judge Gubbins sentenced the defendant to two months in custody, suspended for a period of 12 months on the condition that he keep the peace, be of good behaviour, remain drug and alcohol free and continue to attend treatment.

He set Mr Pullen’s bond at €200.
