Carlow man jailed for assaulting manager of the Seven Oaks Hotel

The defendant, who had been barred from entering the premises, had checked in under a false name

A MAN who checked into a local hotel in Carlow town under a false name was sentenced to one months’ imprisonment after he pleaded guilty in Carlow District Court to assaulting the general manager.

Myles Doran, 133 Browneshill Wood, Carlow pleaded guilty to assaulting the general manager of the Seven Oaks Hotel, Michael Walsh, causing him harm on 11 November. Mr Doran also pleaded guilty to being intoxicated in a public place and of engaging in threatening, abusive and insulting behaviour. All of the offences took place in the Seven Oaks Hotel after Mr Doran, who had been barred from entering the premises, had checked in under a false name.

In court, Sergeant Hud Kelly said that when 36-year-old Mr Doran was asked to leave the hotel by Mr Walsh, the defendant hit him with a closed fist, causing him to fall over.

Sgt Kelly continued that Mr Doran had 11 previous convictions, including public order offences.

Solicitor Chris Hogan told Judge John O’Leary that his client had difficulties with alcohol, that he had split up from his wife and was now living with his parents, who were unwell. He continued that Mr Doran had “money in his pocket because he’d just sold a van” and had gone to the Seven Oaks Hotel “for a few drinks” to get away from it all.

Mr Hogan also told the court that Mr Doran apologised for his actions, that he had no history of violence and that he’d been in custody since the incident.

Judge O’Leary sentenced Mr Doran to one month in prison, which he backdated to 12 November.
