THE disposal of a council staff office was approved at a recent meeting of Carlow Municipal District. Councillors heard that the costs of upkeep or renovations of the property at Castle Hill in Carlow town were excessive, and that additional space would be generated with the restoration of the former Bank of Ireland premises in Court Place.

The two-storey semi-detached office premises at Castle Hill will be sold on the open market to a pension fund, Independent Trustee Company Limited, under the current market price of €205,000.

Director of services Paula O’Brien confirmed that the proceeds from the sale will be reinvested into existing properties and workplaces. It will also be used to match the THRIVE funding for the Bank of Ireland renovation project. “We'll be taking the money from everywhere and anywhere we can find,” said Ms O’Brien.

Answering a question about the potential suitability of the property for housing, Ms O’Brien confirmed that a survey of the property by the council’s housing team deemed it unsuitable for this purpose.
