CHAS lecture on the fascinating life of St Brigid

Dr Elizabeth Dawson from Carlow College
CARLOW Historical and Archaeological Society is hosting a lecture about St Brigid and her fascinating life this week on Wednesday 16 April in the Seven Oaks Hotel, Carlow. The lecture will be delivered by Dr Elizabeth Dawson from Carlow College, who is a medieval historian with expertise in the early medieval history of Ireland.
St Brigid was born around 450AD near Dundalk in County Louth. She lived during the time of St Patrick and was inspired by his preachings so she became a Christian. Her father wanted her to find a husband but Brigid had decided that she would spend her life working for God by looking after poor, sick and elderly people. She entered the convent, receiving her veil from St Macaille.
News of Brigid’s good works spread and soon many young girls from all over the country joined her in the convent. Brigid founded many convents all over Ireland, the most famous one being in Co Kildare. It is said that the convent was built beside an oak tree where the town of Kildare now stands.
Around 470AD, she also founded a double monastery, for nuns and monks, also in Kildare. As abbess of this foundation, she wielded considerable power but was a very wise and prudent superior. The Abbey of Kildare became one of the most prestigious monasteries in Ireland and was famous throughout Europe.
The lecture about St Brigid is at 8pm in the Seven Oaks Hotel. All are welcome and admission is free.
