Carlow skies lit up by UFO!

The strange object that lit up the sky above Carlow last night

Alan O’Reilly of Carlow Weather said his phone “literally melted” on Wednesday evening, as reports of a strange light moving across the sky flooded his social media page ‘Carlow Weather’.

He started receiving texts about the big glowing, noiseless object moving from west to east around 6.30pm. Pictures and videos of the unidentified flying object (UFO) then started flooding in from all over the country which he posted to his page asking whether anyone else had seen it.

One video he posted on Facebook received 1,200,000 views and over 2,500 comments.

“I kinda went there’s got be a reason for this, but we’ve had a pandemic, we have had wars - maybe it’s time that aliens arrived,” he told **The Nationalist**. “I thought ALF was gonna land in my garden!” Over the next few hours, Alan and his followers scoured the internet for possible causes of the alien object.

“A few followers checked flight radar and the international space station. A few people said it was Starlink, but I said this is different. There weren’t flashing lights and people described it as an object closer to the ground,” added Alan.

Soon links to the SpaceX Falcon 9 launch were coming in, and the details matched a similar event in the UK and Netherlands which was also due to a SpaceX rocket, the company owned by Elon Musk. Radar images of the rocket’s path showed it passing from Clare over the midlands and right over Carlow town.

Alan confirmed his suspicions with Brian O’Halloran, a Waterford-based data scientist with a background in astrophysics. It became very likely that it was Falcon 9 dumping fuel in orbit which had instantly frozen and reflected light.

Sadly, Mr O’Reilly didn’t get to see the light when it was most vivid. “I looked out and caught the very tail end of it, but I didn’t see what the video showed,” he said.
