Carlow is second-worst county for penalty points
Carlow only trumped by Wexford in active penalty points
CARLOW has the second highest proportion of drivers who hold active penalty points on their licence in the country. This is according to analysis of the latest Road Safety Authority and Central Statistics Office data from July by car insurance company Quote Devil.
Nationally, 14% of licenced drivers hold active penalty points, but in Carlow 19%, or one in five, licenced drivers do. This means that out of the 49,459 licenced drivers in Carlow, 9,549 have active penalty points on their licences.
The south-east region has the most penalised drivers, with Wexford first, Waterford third, Laois fourth and Kilkenny fifth.
Speeding is the most frequent motoring violation that leads to penalty points, followed by holding a mobile phone while driving.
