Burger moon over Ballon!

The full moon captured by Ballon photographer Lar Carthy last week
A QUICK-thinking photography enthusiast managed to capture this unexpected sight over Co Carlow’s skies last week, when a beautiful full moon turned into a tasty bite!
Lar Carthy from Mullaunmore, Ballon sent these photos to
, which he managed to capture on his camera phone last Monday night, 12 May.“I woke up in the middle of the night and was going to get a drink of water when I happened to see it … I looked out the window and saw the bare tip of it over the mountains,” said Lar, who has a keen interest in photography.
“I just recently got a Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra because there is reportedly a very good camera on it, so the first few shots were out the window with the glass, but then I went out the front door and managed to get it,” he adds.
The shadows that appeared across the moon also created a distinctive shape – much like a burger!
May’s full moon is known as the Flower Moon and gets its name from the abundance of wildflowers that spring into life at this time of year. Thankfully, it lived up to its name and provided stunning views for skywatchers not just in Ireland but around the world – including in Ballon!
