A BMW with illegal number plates and ‘ancient’ road tax was seized by Laois gardaí on patrol.
The car was stopped because the registration plates didn’t comply with regulations, in terms of what gardaí noted as ‘colouring, spacing, font, layout - basically everything except being legal’.
And there was more. A quick check revealed that the car’s tax expired 264 days ago, or nearly nine months.
Gardaí commented on social media: ‘Illegal Plates and Ancient Tax – A Classic Combo.'
The car was seized on the roadside and was towed away by a recovery vehicle.
Posting photos from the scene, the Laois Roads Policing Unit said: ‘Driver educated and one very awkward phone call home. We’ll say it again: Number plates must meet legal standards. Car tax isn’t optional.
‘Drawing attention to your car with illegal plates when your tax is nearly a year out? Not a great idea.’
