All Ireland success in maths for Borris College

Keelan O'Carroll scooped the first prize in the National Maths Eyes Competition 2025

A STUDENT from Borris College has scooped the top prize in a national maths competition.

Keelan O’Carroll (15) was crowned the outright winner in the all-Ireland final of the Maths Eyes Competition. The competition invited students to capture images that demonstrate how maths, such as geometry, can be seen in real life.

Keelan, from St Mullins, is the son of Dawn and Seamus. He was inspired by the beautiful countryside and River Barrow near his home to take the overall winning picture. His entry was titled River Barrow demonstrates symmetry. He won the overall award across all age groups and categories, including for primary, secondary and further education entries.

Luisa Foley, a third-year student from Leighlinbridge, is the daughter of David and Anne. She was also very successful and won an award for finishing in the U14 category. Her entry was Glasshouse of geometric genius.

“It’s really big kudos for Keelan to win the overall prize – he beat everyone else!” said deputy principal Sarah Doyle. “And for Luisa to get into the top three is a brilliant achievement.”

The students’ success comes on the back of them winning the regional title for the Junior Maths team in the Irish Maths Teachers’ Association Regional Pi Quiz. Borris College competed against schools from across the south-east to qualify for the all-Ireland maths finals.

Well done to all the students and their maths teachers.
