€500,000 earmarked for injury unit
THE new St Dympna’s injury unit will receive €499,646 from the HSE in 2026, according to its recently announced annual plan for infrastructure projects.
Nationally, the HSE will spend €3.64m on creating injury units in places like Athlone, Tallaght and Carlow in 2026, all of which are currently at an appraisal stage.
Carlow will receive €56,140 to develop a greenfield site and renovate Kelvin Grove House into a new ambulance station. The designs, which are currently being assessed for feasibility, also include space for a regional training facility and a new children’s therapy services facility on the grounds. The Elm Court extension to the ARDU Substance Misuse Service also received €28,070 for the next phase.
In Kilkenny, €3,649,100 was allocated to continue the refurbishment of existing wards to accommodate acute beds, including space for a paediatric day unit. An additional €673,680 was allocated to accommodate community child and adolescent mental health services for St Canice’s Hospital, Kilkenny.
“Today’s announcement will see the vital progression of key projects across the county and region that will ensure we have robust health infrastructure to meet the demand of our growing population,” said deputy Peter ‘Chap’ Cleere. Deputy John McGuinness also welcomed the investment in Carlow’s health services.
The national investment package announced amounts to a €1.343 billion investment in healthcare infrastructure, equipment and furnishing across the country.
