Twins celebrate 90th birthday in style

Twin sisters Bridie Daly and Maureen Hickson celebrated their 90th birthday recently
IDENTICAL twins Maureen Hickson and Bridie Daly celebrated their 90th birthday last weekend with a joyous gathering of family and friends at the Lord Bagenal Inn.

Born on 23 March 1935, the sisters have maintained an extraordinary bond throughout their nine decades, speaking daily despite living separately in Rutland and Myshall.
“They had a kind of sixth sense about each other,” their younger brother Tommy Murphy (77), told
.
“Even if they weren’t together, they would know how the other one was doing. You could call it an intuition.” The birthday celebration brought together most of their nine children, several grandchildren and even a great-grandson. Also present was their other brother, aged 88, prompting Tommy to joke: “I’m the young one.”

Their remarkable resemblance led to amusing mix-ups in their youth. Tommy recalls one particular incident: “One of them made a date with a fella at a dance and the next Thursday the other sister turned up for the date and he didn’t know the difference,” he said with a laugh.

The twins share a love of both rock ’n’ roll and traditional music dating back to their youth in the 1950s –passions they maintain to this day.

In the early 1960s, the sisters worked several summer seasons in Courtown, when it was establishing itself as ‘Ireland’s Blackpool’, working from April until mid-September. They later married within a year of each other and became active community members, serving on committees and working diligently behind the scenes.

Through marriages, the passing of their husbands and all of life’s challenges, their sisterly bond has remained unbreakable – a testament to the special connection that has defined their remarkable 90 years.
