PAULINE Smith arrived at the Seven Oaks Hotel in Carlow town on Saturday 13 June with no idea that 70 of her family members and friends were waiting for her in one of the hotel’s function rooms.
Her five children â Leona, Alan, Trevor, Martina and Angela â had decided to throw their mother a surprise 70th birthday, with Leona saying: “She deserved a good night. She’s a good mother and she is always thinking of and doing things for everyone else.”
At the party, Trevor said a few words about his mother and emphasised how caring she is and how many people’s lives she touched over the course of her career as a hospice carer.
“She’s the first person a lot of people call, especially when someone is dying. A lot of people turn to her in that hour,” Leona said.
To her children’s delight, Pauline said that she had no inkling that she was being brought to the Seven Oaks for a party, believing that she was going for a family birthday dinner in a function room which had space for her 13 grandchildren.
“She got a big, massive surprise,” Leona said. “It was a great turnout and she danced the night away.”
