Historic talk on Barrow’s boatmen and women in County Carlow

The River Barrow

CARLOW Historical & Archaeological Society (CHAS) will hold the first of its monthly lectures for 2026 in the Seven Oaks hotel on Wednesday 21 January at 8pm. The topic will be the Barrow navigation and the people who worked on it over the years. The talk will focus on the boatmen and the lock keepers who operated the routes from Dublin to New Ross and on to Waterford, linking the Grand Canal to the Barrow at Athy.

Paul Curran, PRO, has gathered up stories and images from relatives, family albums and previous publications on these hard-working personalities. Family names such as Webster, Hoare, Connolly, Bolger, Anderson, O'Neill, Moore and Fennell are just a few associated with the Barrow route over the years.
