Dermot Mulligan, curator of Carlow Museum, at the Irish Museums Association annual conference in 2024.

The funeral arrangements of Dermot Mulligan have been announced. He will repose in R. Healy & Son Funeral Home Pollerton Castle, Carlow (R93 H308) on Thursday, 4 June, from 4pm. It will conclude with prayers at 7.30pm.

He will be removed on Friday morning to the Church of the Holy Family, Askea (R93 AE39) to arrive for funeral Mass at 11am. The burial afterwards will take place in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Carlow.

Dermot, who was well-known in Carlow, passed away suddenly and will be sadly missed by his wife Grace, his family, friends and colleagues.

Words of condolence have been pouring in, with the staff of Carlow Tourism noting he was instrumental in developing Carlow County Museum into "one of the county’s most valued tourism and cultural heritage attractions."

"With a huge knowledge of local history, together with a great intellect and passion, Dermot created a visitor experience that has delighted thousands of visitors each year from Ireland and overseas, since it first opened in 2012. Dermot also served as a highly valued member of the Board of Carlow Tourism. His commitment and enthusiasm for promoting County Carlow made a significant contribution to our organisation and to the wider tourism sector.

"His passing is a tremendous loss to Carlow, to its heritage community and to the tourism sector. We will miss his kindness, generosity and gentle nature hugely," the post continued.

Goresbridge Credit Union noted that he was a volunteer director and was to become its chairperson shortly.

The Embassy of Luxembourg in Dublin wrote that they are "deeply saddened" by Dermot's untimely passing. "Dermot was instrumental at fostering relations between Luxembourg and Ireland & Echternach and Carlow. He was a frequent visitor to Luxembourg and Echternach's hopping procession in honour of St Willibrord," they said.
