A RETIREMENT reception was held recently at the Kernanstown machinery yard canteen to mark the end of an era for one of Carlow County Council's long-serving employees.
Tom Bolger, from Roncalli, hung up his keys after an impressive forty years with the Council, having started on Valentine's Day 1986. Before joining the Council, Tom followed in the footsteps of his father by working at the sugar factory and would go on to spend eight years working there.

He joined the Council as a General Operative on the refuse truck, working alongside colleagues Gerry O'Neill, Hugh Walker, John Doyle and Jack Nolan, with Jim Nolan as driver. He later progressed to the role of driver and operator with Carlow Municipal District, a position he held with dedication until his retirement.

The event, organised by his colleagues, was a warm and well-attended occasion. Kathryn Nolan ensured everyone was well fed with a fine spread of hot food and cakes, while Executive Engineer Ciarán Brennan acted as MC and made the presentation on behalf of Tom's many friends and colleagues. Among those who came along to mark the occasion were former colleagues Hugh Walker and Michael Keating.
Tom is one of six siblings and is the brother of Breda, who also works with Carlow County Council. He takes with him four decades of hard work, good humour, and great memories.
