A CHARITY race that aims to raise awareness about keeping safe on the road will take place later this month.

The inaugural Bodylite five-mile road run is taking place on Sunday 26 January, starting from the arch at Oak Park and finishing at Carlow Hurling Club. The race is replacing the Charlie Curran Memorial Run, which successfully took place over a ten-year period until last year, raising thousands of euros for great causes.

Bodylite Gear is a Ballon-based company that was established by local man Padraic George. It manufactures hi-vis equipment such as jackets and armbands as well as torches that can be worn on the head or other parts of the body for safety reasons and for visibility for people out walking or running. The equipment is lightweight and reflective so it’s easy and comfortable to use.

The event is raising funds for Breakthrough Cancer Research and the Irish Road Victims’ Association as well as raising awareness about safety while out and about on the roads.

“This year, the Curran family passed the baton onto us,” said Aaron Wynne, digital marketing executive with Bodylite Gear. “Padraic is a runner himself and we felt that the race would align very well with our brand, as we’re raising money for the Irish Road Victims’ Association.” Those wishing to take part can do so by registering with Pop Up Races. Two options are available, with race number and medal costing €20, while for €34 there’s the added extra of a Bodylite t-shirt.

The race begins at 11am, but there’s music, warm-up exercises and a bit of craic beforehand, so get along good and early!
