A PUPIL from Rathoe National School has won one of the top prizes in this year’s Texaco Children’s Art Competition. Evan O’Sullivan (10) won a special merit award in the nine to 11 years category for his portrait sketch of YouTuber Markiplier.

Markiplier is a Hawaiian American YouTuber, with over 38 million subscribers on the platform and is famous for Let’s Play videos, where he streams himself playing video games.

Irish visual artist, curator and educator Pauline O’Connell, who was the final adjudicator, said Evan’s artwork was “imaginative” and that he had “demonstrated high levels of skill and creativity”.

School principal Erika Murphy said that Evan’s burgeoning artistic talent has been noticeable to staff in the school for some time.

“Evan has been drawing and sketching for a long time here with us and his big thing is sketching faces,” Ms Murphy said.

“He is just extremely talented and he prefers to work with pencil, so sometimes you can just print out a picture and he’ll just sketch it exactly like or even better than the picture itself,” she added.

The Texaco Children’s Art Competition has been running for the past 72 years and since its inception it has been a platform on which young artists from Carlow and counties throughout the country have had their talents and creativity recognised.
