TWO teams of third-year students from CBS Carlow took part in the regional round of the IMTA (Irish Maths Teachers’ Association) Pi Quiz on Wednesday 13 March, marking International Pi Day.

The event was hosted by Scoil Chonglais, Baltinglass and saw fierce competition among the participating schools.

CBS Carlow's Green Team, comprised of Rafael Renji, Daniel Mullins, Khalid Bashir and Seán Buchannan, put in a fantastic performance. After a nail-biting tiebreaker against St Leo’s College, they secured an impressive third place.

The CBS Red Team, consisting of Adam Zych, Kilian Scully, Kian Scully and Mykhailo Yelnikov, topped the leaderboard with an outstanding 14-point victory, claiming first place. Their win means they will now represent CBS Carlow at the national final of the IMTA Pi Quiz later this month in the Midlands Park Hotel, Portlaoise.

The Pi Quiz, first introduced in 2009 by the Cork Branch of the IMTA, is a team-based competition designed for junior cycle higher level maths students.

The competition, held annually around Pi Day, 14 March, challenges students to work together to solve mathematical problems aligned with the junior cycle syllabus. The winning team from each regional round progresses to the national final, where the top maths minds from across the country will battle it out.

Huge congratulations to all the students involved and best of luck to the Red Team in the next round.

A special word of thanks goes to teachers Alan Brennan and Claire Murphy, whose dedication made this opportunity possible, and to all of the third-year students, who have given up their time to prepare for the quiz.
