CARLOW’s first-ever elected MEP has described how she feels both “honoured and privileged” to have been elected to the European Parliament.

Carlow native Cynitha Ní Mhurchú defied predictions by taking a seat in Ireland South in last week’s European Elections. The first-time Fianna Fáil candidate secured an impressive 55,209 first preference votes, putting her in a very strong position from the first count.

“I was astonished and shocked,” an elated Cynitha told The Nationalist.

“It’s fantastic for Carlow and the southeast to have a voice at the table in Brussels when it comes to issues like foreign direct investment, effecting legislation, infrastructural investment in the region and all the other important issues,” she said.

Energetic and a self-confessed grafter, Cynitha’s campaign was very much a grassroots-up approach. She proudly says she did “feel the love from her native Carlow”, with many Carlovians joining Cythina in Cork for her historic election. “To get over 55,000 first preference votes, I was honoured and privileged."
