CHRISTOPHER Brennan (5) from Myshall was awarded a Little Hero certificate by Water Babies this month for his extraordinary resilience, courage and determination while overcoming health challenges and developmental obstacles.

Christopher is autistic and finds the world overwhelming at times, particularly in noisy or busy environments. He began learning how to swim with Water Babies at just six months old when his mum Gillian Nolan wanted him to feel calm and confident in the water.

The early days were challenging, with tears and protests along the way and Gillian said she often wondered if she was doing the right thing. But Christopher built a trusting bond with Carlow teacher, Sandra and his confidence grew week by week. He can now swim, follow instructions and express himself with confidence in the pool.

Christopher is one of 14 children honoured with the award this year, which recognises how swimming is helping children with complex medical needs to build strength, confidence and essential life skills.

“Watching these little ones flourish in the water, gaining confidence and achieving milestones once thought uncertain fills us with enormous pride,” said Carol McNally of Water Babies. She said she was also proud of the dedicated teachers who “nurture and champion each child’s journey.” Water Babies classes are available across Ireland.
