Carlow's Nigerian community celebrate their rich culture

AN Gairdín Beo was awash with colour and music when members of the Nigerian community in Co Carlow celebrated their rich culture and history recently.

Organised by chairperson of the Carlow Nigerian Community Committee Adetula Skipo Temiola and other committee members, the event attracted Nigerians from all over the county and beyond, including special guest mayor of Longford Uruemu Adejinmi.

Speakers from several different Nigerian ethnic groups gave talks about their culture and history, a reflection of the country’s 250 ethnic groups and over 500 languages.

The ethnic groups were dressed in their traditional attire to sing and dance, giving a brief history of the group while the children played their part by speaking in their native languages and taking part in the activities.

The event was also attended by local representatives such as junior minister Jennifer Murnane O’Connor, cathaoirleach Ken Murnane, cllr Adrienne Wallace and Gráinne O’Neill, integration officer for Carlow Co Council.
