Top blues band returns to Carlow after 15-year hiatus

Big Mama's Door will play The Tower, Carlow

AN ACCLAIMED jazz, soul and RnB band is about to return to Ireland to play a concert in Carlow town after a 15-year hiatus.

Big Mama’s Door is based in London but is fronted by vocalist Fiona McElroy, who lives in Ballylinan.

Fiona travels over to London on a monthly basis to perform with the band but has now decided to play closer to home. They will perform in The Tower, Dinn Rí, Carlow this Thursday, 5 September, which will be a special gig for Fiona as the last time the band played in Ireland was back in 2009.

“The last time I brought the band to Ireland was 2009 and I thought it was time to revisit. A lot has changed, including the line-up, myself excluded, but I'm pretty sure it's the best line-up to date,” said Fiona.

The band have developed their own brand of sexy ’50s RnB, jazz and soul music, infused with professionalism and passion. They consistently fill renowned venues across London such as Ronnie Scott’s and Crazy Coq’s at Brasserie Zedel, among others.

Their repertoire, a delightful mix of originals and covers, is led by Fiona’s vocals, which have been compared to Etta James intertwined with a hint of Patsy Cline, backed by an exceptional band deeply rooted in the iconic sounds of Blue Note, Chess and Atlantic recordings.

The band members are guitarist Andy Knight, double-bassist Franca Shaw, saxophonist Martin Dewhirst, pianist Stephen Walsh and drummer Brad Shaw.

Big Mama’s Door will play on Thursday 5 September in The Tower, Carlow.

They’re also playing on Friday 6 September in Ryan’s, Kilkenny; Saturday 7 September in Arthur’s Blues and Jazz Club, Dublin and on the following night in the Eco Village, Cloughjordon.
