Historic weekend ahead for Bridge United
The Bridge United U14 team that will play in the SFAI National Trophy Final.
Based along the Carlow/Kilkenny border, Bridge United are set to make history on Saturday when they take part in the club's first ever SFAI Final.
United's U14 team reached the SFAI National Trophy Final after an incredible run, beating top sides from Galway, Mallow, Portlaoise and Kilcullen along the way.
The final takes place on Saturday, May 9th in Evergreen Soccer Club, Kilkenny, where Avenue United from Ennis, County Clare, will provide the opposition.
The club features Carlow players Jamie Phelan, from Ballinkillen, and Joseph Foley, from Borris, who each played a key role in the journey to the final.
The majority of the United squad are players from Goresbridge, Gowran and Paulstown, with a number of the boys attending school in Borris.
The final comes at a crucial time of the season for the club - a season that could culminate in a sensational league and cup double if all goes according to plan.
United are currently third in the Kilkenny and District League U14 Division 1. An impressive 3-1 victory over table toppers, Freebooters, last week, coupled with Freebooters' subsequent 0-0 draw against second-place Evergreen, means Bridge United could be crowned U14 Division 1 champions next weekend with a victory at home to bottom club, Stoneyford.
But this weekend is all about the final, with proud mother, Marie Grimley, telling The Nationalist: "We are incredibly proud of the boys — it’s a huge occasion for the club and a special moment to be representing the region on such a big stage.
"We would love to see strong support on the day. It would mean a huge amount to the lads to have a big crowd behind them for a national final."
