Carlow defeat Wicklow to finish second in Kennedy Cup group

The Carlow Kennedy Cup squad that have finished second in their group and will now take part in the Bowl competition.
The Carlow and District Juvenile League’s Kennedy Cup side finished their Kennedy Cup group campaign with an impressive win over Wicklow on Tuesday afternoon.
Carlow came into this game with one win and one defeat, the victory coming against Sligo Leitrim and the defeat against Donegal.
Both sides started this tie brightly, with both teams creating big chances early on.
It was Carlow who took the lead however, in the 6th minute, when Frankie Doyle found himself in behind the Wicklow defence, and he finished his left-footed effort to the back of the Garden County’s net.
David O’Connor’s side grew in confidence after the goal, and they dominated the game for the remainder of the half.
With just over five minutes left in the half, Carlow doubled their lead when Patrick Cranny volleyed the ball to the back of the Wicklow net, following excellent build-up play from the boys in green.
The victors began the second half on the front foot and Glen Cantwell made it 3-0 for the Dolmen County in the 45th minute, following a fine individual effort.
Wicklow pulled a goal back four minutes later through Drew Mernagh, before Carlow made it 4-1 moments later with a goal from Aaron Holmes.
The men in yellow and blue would respond with a goal again in the 58th minute through Tyler McElvaney, but Carlow hung on for a deserved win.
Carlow have now finished second in their group and will enter the Bowl competition tomorrow, where they will face the DDSL.
