Padraig Amond scored a 65th minute goal that proved decisive as Waterford finally got back to winning ways with a 2-1 win over Derry City this evening at the RSC.

The Blues had been in the midst of a seven game losing streak, a run that cost previous manager Keith Long his job, but under caretaker boss Matt Lawlor they recorded a deserved win that lifts them out of the bottom two in the Premier Division table.

Amond went close with a volley that over the Derry crossbar before Darragh Leahy opened the scoring for the hosts five minutes before half time.

The pivotal moment arrived 20 minutes into the second half when a free kick from the halfway line by on-loan Shamrock Rovers star Conan Noonan was knocked down by Tommy Lonergan and Amond's shot was deflected before finding the back of the net for his third goal of the season.

Derry pulled a goal back in the fourth minute of injury time but Waterford were able to hang on for a morale boosting win and Amond and his team mates will be hoping it can kick start their season once again.
