Pádraig Amond was named the Overall Carlow Sportsperson of the Year at the Carlow Sports Star Awards at the Dolmen Hotel on Friday evening.

The soccer star had raced back from Waterford to attend the event after playing against Shelbourne in the Premier Division and picked up the Men's Soccer award, presented by special guest Davy Russell, and ended the night with the overall award.

Former jockey Russell proved to a hugely popular guest as looked back over a glittering career on stage with MC Brendan Hennessy.

Hall of Fame inductee Patricia Amond Lawler brought the house down with a heartfelt speech after receiving her award, while Service to Sport winner Paul Lyons was a hugely popular recipient.

See Tuesday's edition of The Nationalist for full coverage of the event, and also keep an eye on www.carlow-nationalist.ie for video coverage of the event.
