Lawler ready for World Championships

Carlow athlete, Marcus Lawler is this week with the Ireland Athletic Relays team as they prepare for the World Athletics Relay which take place in Guangzhou, China this weekend. It is rich reward for Lawler who, after several set-backs with injury over the previous two years, he clocked a personal best (PB) of 20.74 when winning the indoor 200 metre national title. He followed this up when recording a PB of 47.03 in the 400 metres final.
He was subsequently selected for the European Indoor Championships in Holland. In those games, Lawler ran the third leg on the team that included 17-year-old Conor Kelly and relay specialists Phil Healy and Sharlene Mawdsley claiming fifth place in the final of the 4x400m mixed relay.
This week he will take part in the mixed 4 x 400m relay and the men’s 4 x 400m relay events.
The games are a qualifier for the up-coming World Track and Field Championship in Tokyo in September. The mixed relay team this weekend includes Rhasidat Adeleke, Sharlene Mawdsley, Sophie Becker and Phil Healy who finished fourth in the ladies 4 x 400m relay final at the Paris Olympics.
The city of Guangzhou hosts the seventh edition of the World Athletics Relays. It is the first time the event has been held in China after previous events which were hosted in the Bahamas, Poland and Japan.
