It has been an outstanding year for Harry Butcher (SLOT). Last Friday, the extent of his 2026 achievements was recognised at the Carlow Awards Night, just hours before he added another gold medal to his growing collection of national titles.
One week after claiming Leinster Schools Indoor Combined Events honours, Butcher took on the best athletes in Ireland in the national pentathlon, combining the 60m hurdles, 200m, long jump, shot put and 800m in a demanding one-day competition.
Starting with the 60m hurdles, Butcher finished third in 8.82 seconds, improving on the 8.93 he recorded the previous week. Ahead of him, Harry Millea (Athenry) led the standings after clocking 8.75, while Leinster rival Henry Cresswell (Blackrock) was second in 8.77.
The 200m changed everything.
Butcher exploded from the blocks and quickly established a lead down the back straight. Rounding the final bend, the maroon singlet of the Bagenalstown schoolboy was clearly out in front. He powered home to win in 24.11 seconds, shaving 0.19 off his Leinster Championships performance.
That excellent run propelled him to the top of the leaderboard.
Clearly feeling the effects of his huge effort over 200m, Butcher's long jump did not quite reach the standards he has regularly set this season. However, his leap of 5.82m was still the best of the field and 38cm further than both Harry Millea and El'Nathan Okoh (Moyne), extending his advantage.
A shot put throw of 10.72m, good enough for fifth overall, only made a minor dent in his lead as his nearest challengers also posted similar marks.
The final event of the day was the 800m, where pentathlon titles are often won and lost.
In Butcher's case, it was won.
He crossed the line first in the concluding event to finish with a total of 3,090 points and secure yet another national gold medal in a remarkable season.
