John Curran receives inaugural PL Curran Volunteer Award

Last Friday was a big night for Carlow Athletics as athletes were honoured at the County Awards night held in SETU. The achievements of Juvenile, Senior and Masters athletes across clubs, events and age categories were highlighted from Leinster, to National and International level.

The memory of PL Curran was preserved as the inaugural PL Curran Shield for the best volunteer was awarded to John Curran (Barrow Valley) for his outstanding work within club and county athletics.

PL Curran a well known and much loved face in Carlow Athletics passed away earlier this year after a brief illness. Known for his extensive support and knowledge of Athletics, his enduring volunteerism and his utmost support for both athletes, facilities, clubs and county, Curran received the ultimate honour of having a shield named after him. Thus ensuring his ubiquitous presence in Carlow athletics for years to come.

The first recipient of the award John Curran shares PL’s vision and passion for athletics. With John Curran there is no athlete, club or event that goes unnoticed or is not supported by the Barrow Valley AC man. His commitment to athletics and to the future development of athletes within the sport is enormous.

Like many volunteers, Curran spends many nights a week working with athletes, ensuring that they perform to the best of their ability and receive the best possible training to enable them to do so. For the past few decades he has been present at many Carlow events in a volunteer capacity. Helping to run Championships, assisting athletes and and ensuring that athletics is promoted in the best possible way.

It is only fitting that a man who shares the same vision and passion as the legendary PL Curran should receive this inaugural award.
