Footgolf is coming to Carlow

Footgolf is coming to the county.

On Sunday next the first ever Footgolf tournament will take place in the county. At Quinagh Golf Club in Carlow Town, it will be the opening event of the new season for over 35 aficionados of the sport. Tee off time is 10.00am with the last person coming in between 3.00 and 4.00pm.

International footgolfer, Stan Brennan, is one of the organisers of the event. Next Sunday cannot come quickly enough and he is anxious to showcase the sport in his native town and county.

‘It is the ever one in Carlow,” he says.

“I convinced the Quinagh people to let me dig holes and have a competition on their course. That Sunday they are not going to have any golf and I just want to convince as many people to come and see Footgolf.

“We could turn a few heads here and convince people to try out the sport,” is Stan’s hopes for this tournament.”

The competition is open to men and women while a junior under 16 category is also available. There are also over 45 senior categories and a senior plus for over 55s.

While the paperwork commenced quite some time ago, Stan, with other Carlow enthusiasts, will be out on the Quinagh Golf Course in midweek digging holes and setting up the tees.

“Myself and a few lads are going to do it. On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. A good few lads will go out on Saturday.” The Quinagh track would be considered quite a long course for Footgolf. While there might be concerns among the Quinagh Golf Club members, Stan says he will do everything to ensure the course will not be damaged.

“We will have to fill back in the holes and put the sod back in place. We won’t be digging up any greens. The holes will be situated just off the green.

The course will be fine,” he says with confidence.

They day is a singles format with, hopefully, 50 entrants. That will include the 35 or so regular tour players and there are hopes the organisers can entice at least 15 soccer or golf players to try their hands (feet) in this relatively new sport.

There are hopes that the well-known soccer and gaelic footballer, Eric Molloy, will be able to play and that he could attract a few more to sign up on the day. Molloy’s presence is not set in stone as he is recovering from injury and could have a soccer game that day.

Brennan says the Carlow business community have come in behind him and all eighteen holes have been sponsored.

Entry fee on the day is €20 which includes €5 for a licence to play. Spectators get in free. The regular tour members will be looking down the road to selection for the Four Nations Championship 2026 in Scotland while the World Cup is also on in just over a year’s time.
