Eleven members of Carlow Special Olympics Soccer Club will represent Ireland at international soccer tournament

CARLOW Special Olympics Football Club has been selected to represent Ireland in a prestigious international soccer tournament in Barcelona.

The entire Irish squad of 11 will be represented by Carlow club athletes, accompanied by two coaches and a head of delegation for the Special Olympics meet in Reus, which is just outside Barcelona, in October.

Huge honour

This is an unprecedented honour for the club, and coach Paddy Cahill is excited by the opportunity for his players to show off their skills on an international stage.

“This team have put in an incredible amount of work over the last few years and have been performing very well in their regional competitions. This invitation is well deserved and a great opportunity for the lads to show off their skills on the international stage,” he said.

“I have no doubt they will perform with great passion and take great pride in representing their country. As well as the hard work and determination of our players, we have had serious commitment from all our volunteers, and this a great reward for all involved,” said Paddy.

Community support

“I would love to see all the community get together and support as best they can. This is a great news story for Carlow sports," he enthused.

Carlow Special Olympics Club was founded in 2005 and currently has over 100 athletes who participate in five sports - football, basketball, swimming, bowling and athletics.

The athletes put their heart and soul into their sports, while also making great friendships and bonds.

Carlow Special Olympics Club also has a great team of volunteers and coaches, who really support the athletes and create a fun, welcoming environment for all who come along and get involved.

This trip to Barcelona will require a massive fundraising effort and the club would be very grateful for any support the Carlow community can offer.

GoFundMe

Carlow Special Olympics Club has set up a GoFundMe page, while the club will also hold a big raffle this summer and would welcome all donations of prizes.

All are encouraged to get on board and cheer on our fantastic athletes as they represent their country on the international stage.
