Shea Hayes, the Mount Leinster Rangers manager, was not getting drawn into making predictions on Saturday evening when his side demolished the challenge of St Mullins in Bahana. When asked was Rangers first half performance a potential championship winning offering, he was having no such talk.
“It is trying to get to the gap. Myshall are a step above everyone and all we can do is try and close the gap on them. We have them in round four. We will see what we can get out of that. We will assess it and see where we are at,” said Hayes.
With two goals from Roisin Joyce and another from Rachel Kennedy, the eventual winners led 3-10 to 0-1 at the interval. Anna Murphy converted a free for St Mullins.
“Look, it is the height of the summer. Our aim coming out was to get the ball in quickly into a forward line that is moving well in training. I think they showed it here. 3-9 out of 3-10 before half-time was all from play. It is not too often I have been involved with this team where they do that,” noted Hayes.
Rangers dropped their intensity in the second half but St Mullins were in trouble where they produced a below par performance. Lorraine Bible and Ciara Kavanagh raised further green flags to complete the rout. Hayes was mystified as to why the game was so one-sided.
“St Mullins are a proud club. They had some early wides and then we didn’t give them a chance to breath. We kept the pedal to the metal, kept it going and went after them.”
