Nolan and Murphy lead Rangers to U21 title
Captain Jamie Nolan, scorer of 2-1, leads the celebrations for Mount Leinster Rangers
Mount Leinster Rangers confirmed their favourite status when they overpowered their opponents in the Under 21 A Hurling Championship final at the SETU Campus on Sunday.
They started in whirlwind fashion scoring 1-2 without reply inside the opening four minutes. Captain, Jamie Nolan, scored the goal when he took control of a long searching pass and found the net.
Carlow Town dug deep but relied a lot on the accuracy of Alex Delaney from placed balls. From play, Peter Lynch was always dangerous for the Oak Park side and over the hour he amassed 1-3 and all from play.
Rangers still struggled and only for a goal from Gavin Murphy on the half-time whistle they could well have been questioning themselves in the dressing rooms. As it was, the 2-9 to 0-5 interval lead was all but a match winning advantage.
In the 17 minutes immediately half-time, Carlow Town, playing into the town end had outscored their rivals by five points to four. Rangers went for gold from there and Nolan scored his second three-pointer.
Carlow Town did hit back when a wild pass across the face of his goal from a Rangers defender was intercepted by Lynch and he finished well. Rangers reasserted himself and brothers Donagh and Ruairi Murphy underlined their free-taking ability with further accuracy from placed balls to see out the contest.
