Wheelchair association is holding election hustings tomorrow

The hustings will be held in the Carlow IWA Centre at noon tomorrow, Friday 15 November

IRISH Wheelchair Association (IWA) is holding a number of hustings around the country in advance of the general election, including Carlow IWA Centre at noon on Friday 15 November. The aim is that its members can gain insights on each candidate’s/party’s stance on issues affecting people with disabilities, in advance of polling day.

These events will also give general election candidates the opportunity to hear about what matters to IWA members.

According to the latest census, 22% of Ireland’s population has a disability of some form. In Carlow, that figure is slightly higher at 23% – 7,437 females and 6,896 males.

The IWA is adamant that the needs of people with disabilities must be prioritised in the next programme for government.

“It is imperative, therefore, that people with disabilities use their vote in this general election to help elect candidates who they believe will best represent them,” said IWA’s advocacy manager Joan Carthy.

“We want to put disability front and centre stage in this general election campaign.” You can read IWA’s election manifesto in full at IWA-Election-Manifesto-A4.pdf.
