CARLOW Co Council has received a report of an estimated 50 tyres illegally dumped on the side of Mount Leinster and are working to remove them.

The issue arose at a meeting of Bagenalstown municipal district on 1 April, with council officer Liam Carroll providing an overview of the CCTV dumping project, which is ongoing by the environmental section.

The tyres appeared to have been rolled from the public road between the Corrabut Gap and Nine Stones car park, down the side of Mount Leinster and are now in an inaccessible location. The local farming community is using agricultural equipment to help the council remove many of the tyres from the location, but some remain.

The council said Carlow gardaí have not been informed of the incident, as responsibility for investigation of illegal dumping of waste is a matter for the local authority.

It said they had implemented CCTV in the area and the footage will be reviewed to try and identify the offenders. The council is also appealing to members of the public to come forward if they have any information in relation to the source of these tyres.
