Two in a row for Luisa in maths competition
Luisa Foley won the under-14 category of the Have you Got Maths Eyes? competition
FOR the second year in a row, a third-year student from Borris College has won a prestigious national maths award.
Leighlinbridge’s Luisa Foley won the under-14 category of the competition, adding to her success in the same category last year, for her poster titled ‘Vanishing Vector in the Railway Sector’.
is a project dedicated to helping people of all ages and backgrounds discover the maths they use in everyday life.
Luisa was presented with her award at the national ceremony by minister for education Hildegarde Naughton at the Clock Tower in the Department of Education on Wednesday 29 April. Also in attendance was Luisa’s maths teacher Ms O’Donnell.
Luisa, who is the daughter of Dave Foley and Anne Loane, was recognised for her achievement in developing a positive approach to maths and discovering new perspectives through mathematics.
Acting deputy principal of Borris College Sarah Doyle said the achievement was a wonderful reflection on the maths department at the school, whose “encouragement and dedication continue to foster a positive attitude towards mathematics among students”.
“By promoting creativity, curiosity and real-world problem solving, the department is helping students to see maths not just as a subject in school but as an important and engaging part of everyday life,” Ms Doyle said.
