Leon Doyle from Carlow plays powerchair soccer with Wexford FC

SHOW THEIR real abilities not disabilities has been the incentive behind a fundraiser to support an inspiring powerchair football team.

Wexford FC’s powerchair football team is a determined group of like-minded individuals, including Leon Doyle from Carlow, who attends Delta Day Care Centre.

Like others in our community, these players, despite facing significant physical disabilities, strive to stay active, play sports, be included and succeed. The team proved that these players have real abilities, not disabilities, but they require powered wheelchairs to participate.

The team is currently at a disadvantage as they lack the specially adapted sports powerchairs required for competitive play. This hinders their ability to develop essential skills and build the confidence needed to compete successfully in power soccer.

They are kindly asking for the public’s support in helping them achieve their dream of playing powerchair football at a competitive level and becoming a leading team in the southeast.

Financial assistance is vital to purchase the adapted sports powerchairs, which cost €10,000 each. Their goal is to raise €60,000 to provide six players with these essential chairs.

Leon’s parents Noel and Tomoko have organised a table quiz on Thursday 27 February in the Seven Oaks Hotel to support Leon and the Southeast Wheelchair Soccer Team achieve their goal of purchasing the wheelchairs. A table of four is €40; doors open at 7.30pm and the quiz begins at 8pm.

They have also set up a GoFundMe to support their goal https://www.gofundme.com/f/donate-to-help-purchase-adapted-sports-powerchairs

Wexford FC proudly implements the FAI's ‘Football for All’ programme, integrating individuals with special needs and disabilities into their club. Coaches Andy and Jim hold weekly training sessions for the powerchair football team and the team recently participated in tournaments in Dublin, Cork and Meath.

All involved can see the enormous benefits of powerchair football for the participants, including an opportunity to focus on ability, not disability, developing wheelchair football skills and fostering a sense of belonging in a football team and community as players reach their full potential.

The team, their families and coaches would deeply appreciate your support.
