NOT often do you hear of shops accepting well-expired vouchers, but for one local supermarket in Athy the case was different.
Perry’s independent supermarket on Leinster St Athy has been in business serving the community for over 70 years.
It is a popular supermarket with a lot of long-standing customers frequenting the shop, particularly elderly people from the community.
One loyal shopper approached the counter last week with a 26-year-old voucher for the supermarket.

The customer found the voucher purchased in 1999 by chance the other day and decided to bring it into the shop.
While they were doubtful it could be used, they decided to chance their arm anyway and try, asking former councillor Thomas Redmond beforehand: “Do you think they’ll honour it?” When the customer approached the counter they were met with the kindness of the supermarket staff who decided to honour the voucher that had been purchased more than two decades ago.
Mr Redmond said: “You don’t hear of it often.” “I wasn’t surprised at all from the store. They treat people really well,” he said.
The manager of Perry’s Supermarket, Noel Perry, said: “We always said we’d honour vouchers, doesn’t matter how long people had them, it’s no problem.” He continued: “Last week someone brought one in from 2011 with a value of €100 and we honoured it.” Perry’s has a close relationship with the community of Athy, and small acts of kindness like these show the care it has for its customers.
